Manufacturing Innovation Institute for Smart Manufacturing

The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) and  the Clean Energy Smart Manufacturing Innovation Institute  (CESMII) are inviting proposals on projects that will demonstrate the application of integrated smart manufacturing (SM) technologies to improve energy productivity and operational efficiencies in the exemplar, end-to-end manufacturing supply chains that include several contributing small and mid-sized manufacturers (SMMs).  The supply chains may cover energy-intensive industries and/or industry verticals with a broad reach across the US.

Projects must support the development of a CESMII SM Playbook for manufacturers.  The playbook is intended to turn project outcomes into broadly-applicable guidelines for SMMs in identifying opportunities to leverage SM technology towards achieving higher levels of productivity and capacity, implementing those solutions, and training their workforce to leverage the solutions in their manufacturing jobs.

BNEF Pioneers 2023

In 2023, the program will focus on three global net-zero challenges and will award the Pioneers prize to innovators with scalable, impactful and equitable solutions to these challenges: accelerating the deployment of clean hydrogen; sustainable metals and materials for an electrified future; building a net-zero food production system.

BNEF will also select one or more wildcard winners, unrelated to the chosen challenges. These wildcard applicants can address any issue that helps the world address climate change and we encourage submissions for all climate-tech solutions that lie outside of the three challenges outlined below.

State Small Business Credit Initiative (SSBCI)

On March 11, 2021, President Biden signed The American Rescue Plan Act, which reauthorized and funded the State Small Business Credit Initiative (SSBCI). The new version of the SSBCI program provides a combined $10 billion to states, the District of Columbia, territories, and Tribal governments to empower small businesses to access capital needed to invest in job-creating opportunities as the country emerges from the pandemic. The funds will also support recipient jurisdictions in promoting American entrepreneurship and democratizing access to startup capital across the country, including in underserved communities. Interested small businesses should contact their state government to find out how to apply for funding.

Bethesda Green Innovation Lab

Bethesda Green’s Accelerator is the cornerstone of Bethesda Green’s Innovation Lab program, an expansive suite of programming designed to support entrepreneurs through all stages of their business life cycle.

The Accelerator program is a fast-paced, high-touch, 4-month intensive curriculum. Each cohort launches in early January, utilizing an online platform to manage curriculum, and facilitate mentor engagement and feedback to entrepreneurs.

Bethesda Green seeks to build a cohort that reflects the diverse population of the region and encourages applications from people of color, women and non-binary founders, and members of the gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender community. Bethesda Green does not discriminate based on age, sex, race, religious creed, sexual orientation, disability, or ethnic or national origin.

Specific areas of focus include: Environment (climateTech, blueTech, natural resources, circular economy, and sustainable fashion) and sustainable food cycle: AgTech, food & beverage, packaging, manufacturing, distribution, and retail).

Inventor’s Patent Academy

Patents protect inventions so that inventors can focus on their work and be compensated for it. But many people don’t know how to navigate the patenting process, or even where to start. That’s why The Inventor’s Patent Academy was created. This free, one-of-a-kind, e-learning course aims to help people understand the patenting process and get them ready to apply for their own patent. It also explores challenges inventors may face along the way—particularly those that typically affect women, people of color, veterans, low-income individuals, people with disabilities, and other underrepresented inventors—and provides advice to overcome them.

The Business Accelerator Fund (Michigan SBDC)

The Business Accelerator Fund (BAF) is available to participating business accelerators in Michigan’s statewide SmartZone network. These funds are used toward the delivery of specialized services that are not otherwise available from these business accelerators to assist advanced technology companies regardless of the company’s geography. A participating business accelerator will engage a third-party specialist to help advance the client’s path to commercialization, company success, and economic impact for the state of Michigan.

BAF requests are reviewed and awarded through a competitive process. A company may not receive more than $50,000 in BAF services, though most engagements are in the $7,000 to $15,000 range.

Cooling Operations Optimized for Leaps in Energy, Reliability and Carbon Hyperefficiency for Information Processing Systems (COOLERCHIPS)

Projects funded under the COOLERCHIPS program will develop novel high performance, high reliability cooling systems for compute electronics. These cooling systems will enable a new class of power-dense computational systems, data centers, and modular EDGE systems that will be cooled using 5% or less of the IT load at any location in the United States at any time of the year. The COOLERCHIPS program will support the leveraging of recent nascent advances in thermal management, coolant flow technology, materials, manufacturing, design, controls, and reliability engineering. Illustrative example areas of interest include, but are not limited to:

  • New materials, surface treatments, thermal interface solutions, manufacturing methods and conduction methods for improving heat transfer from chipsets;
  • Advances in heat transfer to create and control 3D fluid structures with minimal thermal boundary layers;
  • Innovations in cooling system engineering for reliability that address severity, occurrence and detectability of potential component failures and novel ideas that include system level risk mitigation, health monitoring and controls; and
  • Novel modular data center or EDGE compute system designs that can operate high density compute systems at any time in any US location with highly efficient cooling systems.
