Clean Bus Planning Awards

The Clean Bus Planning Awards (CBPA) program reduces barriers to zero-emission bus deployment by providing school and transit bus fleets with free technical assistance to develop comprehensive and customized fleet electrification transition plans. CBPA is managed by the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) and funded by the Joint Office of Energy and Transportation (Joint Office). CBPA connects transit and school bus fleets with technical experts to support planning for bus electrification. Fleets also have the option to receive free deployment assistance from NREL at the completion of their plan.

Energy Transitions Initiative Partnership Project

The U.S. Department of Energy’s Energy Transitions Initiative Partnership Project (ETIPP) works alongside remote and island communities seeking to transform their energy systems and increase energy resilience. Island and remote communities have unique physical features that fundamentally shape what energy options they have available. For many of these communities, access to resilient, affordable, sustainable, and clean energy resources is a priority. ETIPP helps communities to assess and advance the solutions that best meet their needs. This multi-year, cross-sector technical assistance effort applies a tailored, community-driven approach to clean and resilient energy transitions, leveraging the experience and expertise of the ETIPP partner network: a broad coalition of local stakeholders, regional organizations, national laboratories, and DOE offices.

Clean Energy to Communities (C2C) – In-Depth Partnerships

Clean Energy to Communities (C2C) is a collaborative research effort administered by NREL and supported by DOE’s Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy (EERE). C2C seeks to foster local clean energy transitions across multiple sectors (grid, buildings, and transportation).

Through C2C activities, the DOE will bring electric utilities, local governments, and community-based organizations together to build confidence in the feasibility of existing clean energy ambitions, develop plans and actions that are technically valid and data-driven, and drive implementation decisions to ensure more socially equitable clean energy-sector outcomes.

Electric Infrastructure Loan & Loan Guarantee Program

The electric program makes insured loans and loan guarantees to nonprofit and cooperative associations, public bodies, and other utilities. Insured loans primarily finance the construction of electric distribution facilities in rural areas. The guaranteed loan program has been expanded and is now available to finance generation, transmission, and distribution facilities. The loans and loan guarantees finance the construction of electric distribution, transmission, and generation facilities, including system improvements and replacement required to furnish and improve electric service in rural areas, as well as demand side management, energy conservation programs, and on-grid and off-grid renewable energy systems.

Bipartisan Infrastructure Law (BIL): Advanced Manufacturing and Recycling Grant Program

The Advanced Energy Manufacturing and Recycling Grant Program is designed to provide grants to small- and medium-sized manufacturers to enable them to build new or retrofit existing manufacturing and industrial facilities in communities where coal mines or coal power plants have closed. These facilities will produce or recycle advanced energy products or contribute to emissions reductions within the manufacturing sector. DOE has released a $425 million funding opportunity announcement for round 2 projects.

DOE’s Office of Indian Energy is soliciting applications from Indian Tribes, which include Alaska Native Regional Corporations and Village Corporations, Intertribal Organizations, and Tribal Energy Development Organizations to:

  • Install clean energy generating system(s) and/or energy efficiency measure(s) for Tribal Building(s) (Topic Area 1),
  • Deploy community-scale clean energy generating system(s) or community energy storage on Tribal Lands (Topic Area 2),
  • Install integrated energy system(s) for autonomous operation (independent of the traditional centralized electric power grid) to power a single or multiple Essential Tribal Building(s) during emergency situations or for tribal community resilience (Topic Area 3), or
  • Provide electric power to Tribal Building(s), which otherwise would be unelectrified (Topic Area 4).

Department of Energy Heat Pump Defense Production Act Program

The purpose of this Funding Opportunity Announcement is to accelerate the growth of domestic production capability of electric heat pumps to meet the anticipated increased demand for clean energy technologies as the economy transitions to net-zero emissions. Amendment 000002 – This FOA is being re-opened to solicit applications for new Topic Areas: Topic Area 3 – Residential Heat Pump Production Capability, Topic Area 4 – Heat Pump Water Heater Production Capability, Topic Area 5 – All Other Heat Pump and Component Production Capability.

FY2024 Technology Integration Funding Opportunity Announcement

The Department of Energy (DOE) announced $15 million in new funding for projects that will advance deployment of technologies critical to achieving net-zero greenhouse gas emissions in the transportation sector. The funding will drive innovation in equitable clean transportation and is aligned with strategies detailed in the U.S. National Blueprint for Transportation Decarbonization. The funding is administered through the Vehicle Technologies Office (VTO) within DOE’s Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy (EERE). Topic areas in VTO’s Fiscal Year (FY) 2024 Technology Integration funding opportunity include:

  • Clean Cities Outreach, Engagement, and Technical Assistance

The Solutions for Lasting, Viable Energy Infrastructure Technologies (SOLVE IT) Prize aims to empower communities to identify and implement innovative clean energy solutions in a way that works for their unique needs and challenges. The prize will award competitors with a demonstrated history of productive work with communities. Competitors will work collaboratively with stakeholders interested in community-scale (neighborhood-, town-, or city-scale) planning around clean energy to engage their communities, build a network of support for clean energy or decarbonization projects, and develop plans for carrying out these projects.
