Materials, Operation, and Recycling of Photovoltaics (MORE PV)

This program will provide up to $20 million over three years for research and development projects to create innovative and practical approaches to increase the reuse and recycling of solar energy technologies. The program is designed to address challenges associated with the rapid deployment of PV systems in the US. The focus of the program is to support technology improvements to reduce these challenges with a holistic view of all stages of the PV lifecycle—from the material needs and installation to operation and end of life (EOL).

This opportunity also supports DOE’s Photovoltaics End-of-Life Action Plan which aims to halve the cost of recycling by 2030 and reduce the environmental impact of solar energy modules at end-of-life. Topic Area 1is MORE Connection: Connecting PV Materials, Design, Installation, Performance, and End of Life – 3-6 projects, $2-4 million each. Topic Area 2 is Solar Partnership to Advance Recycling and Circularity (Solar PARC) – 1 project, $8 million.

Energy Storage Demonstration and Validation

The Department of Energy is soliciting applications for innovative long duration energy storage system (ESS) demonstration projects that advance a technology towards commercialization and validate its cost and performance in the field to the energy stakeholder community. These demonstrations will contribute data to the National Lab led Rapid Operational Validation Initiative (ROVI) in order to unlock insights about the performance of these systems that will accelerate the testing and validation process for emerging technologies.

The FOA contains three areas of interest based on eligible technology: Lithium Batteries, Flow Batteries, and Other Innovative Technologies, that will each be eligible for up to $5 million in federal funding available with 50% cost share provided by the applicant organizations.

USDA Small Business Innovation Research and Technology Transfer Programs (SBIR/STTR) – Phase 1

The USDA SBIR/STTR programs focus on transforming scientific discovery into products and services with commercial potential and/or societal benefit. Unlike fundamental research, the USDA SBIR/STTR programs support small businesses in the creation of innovative, disruptive technologies and enable the application of research advancements from conception into the market. The STTR program aims to foster technology transfer through formal cooperative R&D between small businesses and nonprofit research institutions. Topic areas include biofuels, rural and community development, natural resource conservation, aquaculture, plant production and protection engineering, small and mid-sized farms (sustainability and profitability) and more.

Resurgence Cleantech Accelerator

The Resurgence cleantech accelerator is powered by Deep Tech Ventures at the University of Chicago’s Polsky Center for Entrepreneurship and Innovation. Startups will gain access to business training and technical advisement, premier facilities, industry mentors, student talent, and venture capital, as well as additional funding opportunities. This 9-month hybrid program is designed to support ventures that are focused on four specific areas of the cleantech industry: Energy storage and infrastructure, Next-generation nuclear solutions, Hydrogen and alternative fuels, and Materials refinement and process intensification.

Startup Innovation Challenge

The competition is open to all early-stage startups (Series A or earlier) that are focusing on Carbon Removal and Carbon Capture, Utilization & Storage anywhere in the world.

An expert team will review the applications and select five finalists, who will pitch before a live, online audience and judges at the SOSV Climate Tech Summit on September 26. The judges will announce the winner the next day during the summit.

Underserved and Indigenous Community Microgrids

This program is specifically focused on conducting research, development and demonstrations (RD&D) to develop and implement replicable microgrid solutions for underserved and Indigenous communities in remote, rural, and islanded regions throughout the United States.

DOE’s Office of Electricity’s research partners will develop and demonstrate advanced microgrid-enabling technologies, including renewable generation and storage systems, multi-nodal small-scale high-voltage direct current, advanced demand-side management strategies, and microgrid control systems.  The FOA also includes opportunities to address non-technical barriers to deployment of microgrids in these communities, such as lack of local technical expertise and supply chain challenges.

Novel Superconducting Technologies for Conductors

ARPA-E seeks proposals for novel scalable superconducting manufacturing methods that can increase the production rate and significantly reduce the cost of high-quality superconducting tapes or wires with uniform performance parameters. Projects as part of this Exploratory Topic will work to develop novel fabrication methods for HTS tape or wire that can concurrently increase continuous tape length, reduce electrical variation along the tape, increase overall production rate while also, significantly reducing the production costs and maintaining a high level of tape performance.

Wind Turbine Materials Recycling Prize Phase 1

The goal of the prize is to develop robust, domestic recycling options for fiber-reinforced composites and rare earth elements can lessen the United States’ need to extract and process raw materials, which can, in turn, reduce damage to the environment. Additionally, recycling rare earth elements would safeguard domestic manufacturing by improving resilience to price volatility and supply chain disruption.

During the first phase, Initiate!, competitors will prepare a submission package that highlights a concept for wind material recycling focused on economic and environmental sustainability. Up to 20 winners will be selected to receive $75,000 in cash each and an invitation to compete in the second phase of the competition.

FY2023 Ocean-Based Climate Resilience

The program will form partnerships with and fund eligible U.S.-based organizations to develop business accelerators to identify and support small businesses across ocean-based climate resilience theme areas to attract capital, mature their technologies, and scale their business models for climate impact and economic prosperity. Those theme areas are ocean-based renewable energy, coastal and ocean carbon sequestration monitoring and accounting, hazard mitigation and coastal resilience, ecosystems services, including change detection, change analysis and change adaptation and mitigation and other ocean, coastal and Great Lakes-based climate resilience theme areas as determined by the applicant.

Climate Program Office (CPO) – NIHHIS FY2024 – Inflation Reduction Act (IRA)

CPO is seeking applications for two individual competitions in FY24. These 2 competitions are to expand creation and implementation of actionable, place-based climate information for community heat resilience.

Competitions 1 (NIHHIS Center of Excellence – Center for Community Climate & Health Observations, Monitoring & Evaluation) and 2 (NIHHIS Center of Excellence – Center for Climate and Health Assessments, Policy, and Practice) will support the new NIHHIS Centers of Excellence. The first center will provide technical and other assistance in developing community science observations to inform equitable heat resilience action while the second center will focus on technical and other assistance in planning, taking action on, and evaluating equitable heat resilience informed by prior observations and monitoring.

Congress established the Small Business Innovation Research / Technology Transfer (SBIR and STTR) programs to support scientific excellence and technological innovation through the investment of Federal research funds in critical American priorities to build a strong national economy.  Federal agencies with large research and development budgets set aside a small fraction of their funding for competitions among small businesses only. Small businesses that win awards in these R&D programs keep the rights to any technology developed and are encouraged to commercialize the technology.
